I hope everyone had a wonderful spring vacation. The weather cooperated with us and will be getting warmer as the days go on.
A project Mrs. Yorston's class had during this time was a "Geometry Photography Hunt". Students spent time at various locations to look for geometric figures such as angles, 2D and 3D shapes, and lines. Then they had to take 8 or more photos of these geometric concepts, print them, and make a picture book. Each picture had to have a description of the concept on the page. The work the class did was amazing! We had pictures from a miniature golf range, Morristown, Maryland, and even Argentina! We all learned that geometry was everywhere, even in our own backyard. The children had fun with this project and thank you to the parents who helped.
In social studies, we are currently finishing the theme of tall tales, myths, and legends. We enjoyed the stories of Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Casey Jones and also some Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. The class learned that tall tales are humorous exaggerations that tell why something is the way it is; legends may be based on facts, but has details that didn't happen; myths are stories that explain nature through actions of gods and goddesses. This theme also crosses over to reading where we read a West African tale called "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears" and "Coyote Places the Stars".
Along with our usual work, we have been preparing for the upcoming NJ ASK test in May. At least once a week, the children spend time working on types of reading selections, writing prompts, and math problems they may encounter during the testing week.
We look forward to our end of year activities such as swim lessons and a picnic.
