Welcome Spring!

Here is an overview of what we are learning in Room 30:

In reading workshop, we are in the middle of reading our class novel Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Next, we will be reading Danger in the Desert by T.S. Fields which takes place in Arizona and goes along with our study of the Southwest Region in social studies. In reading workshop we have been working on various test-taking strategies in the areas of reading
comprehension and writing open-ended responses to reading. After NJASK testing, we will be working on the following skills in reading: mood, author’s purpose, point of view, and interpreting figurative language.

In writing workshop, students are working hard on their poetry portfolios! Upon completion, we will be holding a poetry celebration. More information will be sent home soon. Our next unit is persuasive writing.

In social studies, we are studying the Southwest Region of The United States. During this unit of study, we will be focusing on the following questions, among others:

*How have geography and history shaped life in the Southwest?
*How do people depend on the Colorado River and share its water?
