Grade 5

January 27-31
Third graders are currently making clay book covers with 3-D relief images from their composite mythical creatures and symbols from their coat of arms. Therefore we do not have homework this week. Fourth graders are making clay masks with exaggerated expressions so they do not have homework this week. Galvin - Tess - draw an animal dancing

Third graders are working on clay. I demonstrated for them how to create a clay slab with additive and subtractive sculpture techniques so that their coat of arms can be in relief (3-D). Next week they will make their own clay piece. Therefore no homework so that the students can concentrate on sculpting rather than checking homework.
Yorston - Owen assigned to draw a clover with as many leaves as you want (they will start clay next week)
Fourth graders saw a demonstration on how to do the drape method with clay to create a 3-D mask. They started making a paper form and designing a face with exaggerated emotion that they will make in clay next week.

We read the book "Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail". After looking at various works of art by Picasso, we discussed his idea of cubism as a way to show many views of one person or object. We also looked a little deeper into his portraits to figure out what type of personality Picasso was expressing rather than drawing a person's exterior appearance. We discovered ways to use the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, texture, value, space and form) to express abstract personalities and emotions. For homework they need to choose a person to make a portrait of, and interview that person to find out what type of person he or she is. I handed out a sheet with some sample questions. The more they can find out about the person, the more they have to work with for the picture.
October 17-19
Third graders are continuing to work on their books and stories about unique composite mythical creatures. After completing a wordsearch about the Middle Ages, I begin assigning one of the students to be the teacher. As the teacher he/she gets to assign what the whole class needs to draw for next week, as well as getting to go around with the grade book and check out the homework that is completed. Then he/she gets to help choose the next student to be the teacher! They are very excited to start being teachers. :) In Mrs. Ferraiolo's class, Rory is our first teacher and she assigned to draw a Medieval Bunny and to add color. In Mrs. Guiliano's class Madison was chosen and she assigned to draw your favorite animal using a lot of detail.

Fourth graders are continuing to work on color families and interesting design compositions. For homework they have a color wordsearch with extra credit on the back. If they complete all the definitions, they will get a special prize! Fifth graders worked on drawing faces in three-quarter view and profile realistically with blending and shadows. For homework they are to practice drawing faces in those two views.
October 7-11
Third graders are studying the Middle Ages and the Bestiary=Book of Beasts. For homework they were given a wordsearch that includes many terms from Medieval Times. They can color for extra credit :) Fourth graders are talking about color families: mixing primary and secondary to create tertiary colors, finding colors opposite on the color wheel=complementary and next to each other=analagous and many more. There were given a sheet to color in the colorful kingdom according to the paragraph at the bottom. The fifth graders are working on drawing realistic faces with blending and shading. For homework they are to create different values with a pencil and then also values with different colors. Next work on putting in all the details into a face similar to what we have been doing in class. They were given a worksheet to do this on.

Please make sure to get your Sketchbook, and bring it to school

on days when you have art class!
