1.) September/October/November - Peace –

Reading Strategies: Visualizing & Determining Importance 

Class Novel: In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson

Writing: Introduction to the writing process,  Descriptive Journal Entries and Paragraphs & Summary

Social Studies: Different Cultures, Biographies of Leaders in Peace, Explorers & Communities

 

 

2.) December/January/February – Earth Science

Reading Strategy: Visualizing & Determining Importance –

Class NovelCharlotte’s Web 

Writing: Venn Diagram, Science Journals, Summaries, Descriptive Journal Entries, Response to Open Ended Questions & Expository Essays 

Social Studies: NJ Regions and Natural Resources

Science: Rocks and Minerals

 

3.) February/March/April – Fairness  

Reading Strategy: Inferring & Making Connections

Class Novel: Civil War on Sunday

Writing: Compare and Contrast Essays, Expository Essays, & Connection Journal Entries

Social Studies: NJ Native People, Pilgrims, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Underground Railroad, & Immigration

 

4.) May/June – Characteristics of Life

Reading Strategies: Questioning & Determining Importance

Class Novels: Buddy The Seeing Eye Dog & Helen Keller 

Writing: Persuasive Brochure, Science Journals, & QAR (Question and Answer Relationships)

Social Studies: Disabilities and Tolerance

Science: Knowledge of Human Body & Animals

 

Fix Up strategies will be taught throughout the year and crafted to meet the needs of the students. Once a reading strategy has been taught, it will be reviewed throughout the year. 

 

 

 

 

 

Additional Units

Plan for 2007 - 2008

 

1.)  September - June – New Jersey Unit – Students will complete projects that incorporate reading, writing, social studies and technology to learn about the history, geography, and people of New Jersey.

 

2.)  October - January – Four Square Writing Unit – Students will learn how to use the Four Square Writing Method to complete essays in the expository, descriptive, and persuasive forms. 
3.)  January – March - New Jersey Ask Review Unit - Open Ended Questions, Responding to a Poem, Writing a Narrative for a Picture Prompt, Math Missions and Writing Explanations to Math Problems, Portfolio Writing Samples

 

4.)  November - June – Creative Writing Unit – Students will use the writing process to craft personal and creative narratives.  
5.)  September-June- Word Study and Spelling Unit – Differentiated spelling - Students are assessed each week and given one of three lists.  Multi-sensory phonics activities are used to improve their knowledge of word structure (EBLI & Project Read).
